The New Alphabet : DNA #1

Language and its written notation unfold in opposite movements between ordering cosmos and living chaos. Starting from the digital as a seemingly universal substrate of writing, the first volume of the series Das Neue Alphabet traces this interplay on the basis of exemplary cases: the relationship between binary code and monadology in Leibniz's philosophy, the technological and cosmological aspects of non-Western script systems, which act as a counter-image to a monolithic understanding of language, and the equally poetic and order-creating power of the children's song for learning the ABC. The texts are accompanied by paintings by the artist Wolfgang Tillmans.
