Fictional Selves

Kyle MacLachlan

In this highly anticipated memoir, Kyle MacLachlan shares the funny, moving and utterly original story of his offbeat journey through Hollywood, the roles that shaped him and the making of a cult icon. Plucked from obscurity to star in David Lynch’s Dune, MacLachlan went on to deliver a startling performance in Blue Velvet before taking on his career-defining role as Agent Dale Cooper in the TV phenomenon Twin Peaks.

From critical acclaim to the infamous – and unforgettable – Showgirls, his career has been anything but predictable. Fictional Selves is a book of doppelgangers, with MacLachlan mirrored by his own prodding ego (“Other Kyle”), the iconic characters he inhabited, and the ones that eluded his grasp but gave him a profound and surprising lens onto himself as a person and a performer. Along the way, he offers candid insights into collaborators including David Lynch, Laura Dern, Dennis Hopper and Anthony Hopkins, and shares lessons learned about fear, fame, ambition, love and fatherhood.

Playful, self-aware and revealing, this is the remarkable story of one of Hollywood’s most distinctive and enduring actors.
